"While waiting in freezing air for previous image, I realized that rails are not only necessary but also artistic. The back story - my traveling companion knew a Southern Pacific Railroad crewman from Alpine so he asked him to call the SP dispatcher in San Antonio, Texas, about 5am to see if the stack train was on schedule for daylight arrival, since we did not want to get out and wait in the cold if there was no train. Fortunately, everything broke right." February 1986. Photograph by J. Parker Lamb, © 2017, Center for Railroad Photography and Art. Lamb-02-084-08

"My traveling companion and I had an unusual opportunity to assist the diligent crew members that operated the Southern Pacific Railroad trains we documented in July 1986. While pacing a westbound train west of Marfa, Texas, we observed a coupler knuckle break on one of the cars. Fortunately, we were able to ferry two crew members and their tools back to the car. Here we see the broken knuckle being replaced. By assisting the crew for about an hour, we saved them from having to walk back and forth from the head end (two or more miles). This would have shut down the main line." Photograph by J. Parker Lamb, © 2017, Center for Railroad Photography and Art. Lamb-02-087-12
