Northbound Southern Railway freight train leaves Meridian, Mississippi, behind 2-8-8-2 steam locomotive no. 4043 in December 1950 (Baldwin Locomotive Works, 1928). These locomotives were used mainly for coal drags on mountainous lines. No one could ever confirm to the photographer that such a locomotive operated south of Birmingham, Alabama. It might have been a test run for an engine repaired in the Birmingham backshop. Unfortunately, the negative was lost soon after being developed and this restoration was created digitally by combining two marginal prints, which had laid dormant for five decades. Photograph by J. Mississippi's Meridian Union Station was always busy around mid-day as two northbound Southern Railway trains passed through within an hour.
