Amtrak was barely two months old when the combined Super Chief / El Capitan rolled into Chicago on July 4, 1971, looking for all the world like the Santa Fe train that it had been prior to May 1. The Superliner cars that predominate on long-distance Amtrak trains today were based on the Santa Fe's bi-level cars like the ones on this train. Photograph by John F.
