To celebrate 200 years of railroading, Railroad Heritage magazine rolls into Fall with a cover story about Victor Hand’s British steam photography, Canadian Pacific artwork in the Rockies, a photo gallery from our archives, and more. Below is what you’ll find in the Center’s quarterly member magazine.
- Steam’s final hour … where it all began: From 1961 to 1964, Victor Hand made eight trips to England, where railroading was born in 1825, as well as to Scotland and Wales to photograph big-time steam in its grand final chapter. Read about his adventures in Justin Franz’s story and enjoy Hand’s spectacular black and white images.
- 3.3 miles of mythos and grandeur: Tom Parkins’ article covers the Canadian Pacific Railway as art in Glacier National Park, British Columbia—where the original transcontinental main line once inspired artists and landscape photographers with its trestles, loops, and snow sheds. See their works that captured the spectacular scenery and attracted trainloads of tourists.
- “Smoke”: See the six winning images of the 2025 John E. Gruber Creative Photography Awards, as well as those in the “Judges Also Liked” category.
- Highlights from our collections processing: Enjoy a rich photo gallery featuring newly processed images by Jim Shaughnessy, Karl Zimmermann, and Stan Kistler.
- Out of the archives: The Center’s Jordan Craig writes about the threat of digital image decay lurking in drives, discs, and other storage media, and how the Center is working to protect our digital assets (which you can do for your own photography).
- News: See the dedication of the Center’s photographic banners in Chicago Union Station, plus online program news, memorials, and more.
