Fall 2016: Connecticut Archive, Missabe Yellowstones, St. Maries River

The Fall 2016 issue of Railroad Heritage® debuts a new look to the magazine—the first extensive redesign in its sixteen-year history. On the cover is Robert LaMay’s night view of Shore Line East F7A no. 6690 in the shops at New Haven, Connecticut, in 1992. LaMay’s photography resides at Archives & Special Collections of the University of Connecticut Library, the Center’s partner for Conversations Northeast, a one-day conference at Storrs, Connecticut, on October 29, 2016. Archivist Laura Smith shares more highlights in an article about UConn’s railroad photography. We share some highlights from our own archive with a gallery of J. Parker Lamb photographs of Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range’s 2-8-8-4 “Yellowstone” steam locomotives. Finally, Marc Entze discusses his decade-long project of photographing the timber-hauling St. Maries River Railroad in northern Idaho, a case study of the benefits that can come from taking a very deep look at relatively small place. We discuss the importance of metadata in our regular “Out of the Archives” column and share some suggestions of how to prioritize this tedious but critical part of the archiving process. We also debut a new column on European travel posters by Arjan den Boer, drawing from his outstanding retours.eu website. News, letters, and two new book reviews round out the issue.
